With few port calls and lots of leisurely days at sea, repositioning cruises are great for honeymooners or couples trying to rekindle their romance. Since there are no early-morning shore excursions or tenders to catch, couples can sleep in and have breakfast delivered to their stateroom.

And no early mornings make it easy to stay up late and dance the night away, or enjoy a nightcap in a quiet lounge.

During the day, many cruise ships offer special classes and seminars. And couples’ massages and spa sessions are a great way to unwind. On some ships, you can even have dinner at a table just for two out on deck.

Whatever your taste or budget, there’s a repositioning cruise that will give you lots of time together away from the hassles and headaches of the usual routine.

Small ship repositioning cruises.

There are several advantages to smaller cruise ships. Because there are fewer passengers, it’s easier for the staff to get to known you – and your preferences – quickly. So chances are, the service you experience on a small ship will be top notch. And it’s easier to make special arrangements for just the two of you. On some small ships, whatever you imagine, they’ll do their best to deliver.

Sea Dream I and II are two of the best cruise ships for romantic couples. In fact, the Balinese beds out on deck are probably the most romantic spot at sea. The crew will make them up for you so you can sleep under the stars – complete with Champagne and chocolates. These are also the best ships for dining alone. Notify the maitre d’hotel in advance and he’ll set up a table in a secluded spot out on deck.

Sea Dream I sails from Malaga to Puerto Rico in October and returns to Southampton, England in April. In November, Sea Dream II sails from Lisbon to Puerto Rico, returning from Barbados to Malaga, also in April. If you’re opting for one of the spring sailings, plan to spend a few extra nights in San Juan or Barbados before your cruise.

Another small ship line that’s good for romance is Windstar. All three of their vessels have computer-assisted sails, which are thrilling to experience. The two smaller ships, Wind Spirit and Wind Star, can accommodate 148 passengers.

In November, Wind Surf sails from Lisbon to Barbados and Wind Spirit sails from Lisbon to St. Maarten. Both ships return to Lisbon in April.

Mid-size ship repositioning cruises.

Oceania Cruises has three 700-passenger ships. And they’re launching their first purpose-built ship in January of 2011. Celebrity French chef, Jacques Pepin, created the menus, so the food on board is very good. Couples who want more facilities, such as a larger spa, fitness center, and more dining choices, will enjoy these ships. The cozy, private cabanas by the pool are pretty fabulous

In November, their Regatta leaves Barcelona and visits Hamilton, Bermuda on the way to Miami. Their Insignia leaves Barcelona in December, bound for Rio de Janeiro, one of the most romantic spots in the world. In January, their new ship, Marina, sails from Barcelona to Miami. She returns to Barcelona in March.
